Before you hate BP, look in the Mirror….then hate BP

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Everyone seems to be jumping on the hate BP band wagon. Maybe thats not a bad thing. Well no maybe about it, it is a good thing. What is most concerning about the situation is BP is not the only bad oil company. As far as evil oil companies they are kind of the standard. Exon never even paid the fines for the Valdieze spill. In 2003, Greenpeace listed Exxon as #1 Climate Criminal.  They spend huge sums every year funding global warming skeptics. They still use the same single hull ships that have caused a number of spills. Oh then there are a number of human rights violations. Citgo, owned by the Venezuelan government has a horrible track record.  Chevron has done major damage to Ecuador and Angola and Niger Delta to name a few. Not to mention they own the rights to a number of battery patents and will not let anyone make them.  Shell has the record for the largest fresh water spill.

All the big oil companies are pure evil, and few would argue with that. But it is time we look in the mirror. This is our own fault. We depend on oil and gas way to much. It is our oil consuming selves we need to put blame on too. We enable and have created this situation. We drive to big of cars, to fast, and wastefully. We need to really support EV efforts and stop blocking alternative energy development. We need to support wind and solar, not nuclear, and stop giving subsidies, tax breaks and incentives to big oil. Gas prices need to go up, period. That’s the only way to make people care. That might be thinking to big though. We really are talking about personal choices here. If you own an SUV, unless you have 10 kids, sell it. Does your car get less then 30 mpg? Stop driving it. Next time you speed away from the light, remember your enabling BP and all its friends. Next time your buying a car, think of fuel economy, not cup holders. If you can a ford one of the EV’s buy one, not a sports car. Have a commute to work? Carpool. Take the bus, train or ride your bike when ever you can. It’s time we look in the mirror and put some of the blame where its due.

Care about the environment? Hate oil spills? Change your attitude about mowing grass!!!

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Grass mowing is one the most widely ignored environmental strains in the USA. It’s one we can not even avoid if we want to. Most places have laws against tall grass, and a huge amount of social pressure to have a nice lawn. This pressure is so strong even a University, a place that forward thinking, and “liberal” ideas abound, would not even consider anything but the golf course cut. Our ideals must change! If we really care about the environment, clean air, and future generations we have too think differently about what is right and wrong. Tall grass or an unkept lawn is actually a positive habit, not a negative one. We need to applaud, not fine or scorn people that DO NOT mow and put that social pressure on those with the manicured, environmentally damaging lawns.  Maybe you don’t think a manicured lawn is that bad? Well read further for more info.

20 min on 6 seconds of audio. The Amen Break and its influence

Friday, January 15th, 2010

This is a great video about the Amen Break first recorded by the Winston’s back in 1969. It brings up some interesting info and makes some great points about copyright issues and the need for more public domain work and things like Creative Commons. It also shows the effect on our culture six seconds of drums can have. Google it for more information, there have been whole studies on why the six seconds are so effective.

Bank with the small guys!

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

Yeah it’s common sense, but bears repeating. Big banks broke the system, don’t give them the power to keep doing it. Check out the site below for more info, and the video to help convince you.

Minority Student wants to kiss his girlfriend goodbye, could face jail time and fine

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

Sorry about to rant a little here, so if your not interested in politics, keep moving…

Haisong Jiang is currently in jail because he “breached” security at an airport to kiss his girlfriend goodbye. People are angry not because he is in trouble, but because he will not be able to face more jail time. This is all after new security measures put in place after the recent bomb attack. What is interesting is that we have gone beyond logic, compassion, and humanity all so we can FEEL safe. We will give up our freedoms and flexibility just so we can think we are secure.

Homemade Tamiflu or an Italian Snow Ball as others may call it…

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

In my job I get ALOT of exposure to people, and a lot of times I have to touch their keyboards and mice, which is a breeding ground for lots of nasty bacteria and viruses. This Friday I began to get sick, soon after I find out I have been exposed to at least two confirmed cases of the “swine flu” or H1N1.  Not being a huge fan of the doctor, and preferring to do things my way, David and I decided to create a super smoothy that will kill just about any virus infection you may have. Sure it does not taste the best, but to be honest, it’s not too bad! Check it out! (more…)

USDA Beans, no music will be playing for them.

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

A while back a friend of ours gave us a bag of their USDA Pinto beans. I will not name them, because they would probably get in trouble for giving away any extra they had gotten. If you don’t know what I am talking about, they are the free ones the US Department of Agriculture gives to local governments to pass out to the poor. Which is a really cool idea, in theory. Well I decided to cook them today… (more…)

Bill Maher on the Situation room is dead on

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Thought I would share this video, hope it stays up. Bill Maher is dead on about the obsession with profit in all things. He also nails the Gates situation and makes some logical jabs at Sarah Palin (yeah I know easy target). What he says about Gates arrest though, expresses my feelings to the letter. It is not a racial issue. Why can anyone be arrested for being belligerent in there own home. Some, definatly not all police, play the roll of bully, and if you do not kiss their butt, you will pay. Wether it be a ticket or in this case going to jail. Police have a hard job, and the majority that are great and doing a great service to this country should be angry and outraged that a very few get this way and spread a bad reputation and fear of police. Ok start the angry comments…. now.
